Drugs Advocacy
The aim of the Community Advocacy Service is to provide Advocacy for people of working age and above (18+) with past or present drugs issues living in the community in North West Surrey.
Support is given to clients to enable and empower them to have their voice heard, promote self-confidence, and develop skills so they can advocate on their own behalf. The service only provides one to one advocacy, and does not take up collective service user involvement issues.
The service can assist with a wide range of issues such as: treatment/medication issues, support at meetings, probation, benefits, housing, debt, complaints, liaising with other organisations or professionals, etc. The service has many links to specialist help such as: solicitors, debt advice and support, CAB, etc and may assist clients to access these services where appropriate.
The service is available to anyone with a current or past issue with drugs and is known to the Windmill Team. In addition, the service is available to members of voluntary sector groups across the locality such as those operated by SADAS (Engage/Liberty etc).
Referrals can also be made by other organisations such as the Surrey Health Promotion Team. However, the expectation is that the majority of people self refer.
Additionally, the service is available to anyone attending Windmill House on either the ‘detox’ or ‘six week’ programme regardless of area of residence. However, the emphasis is on those individuals whose primary presentation involves drug use.
It is an expectation that all clients will also be registered with a GP.
