Mental Health Advocacy
Matrix has been delivering professional mental health advocacy services since its creation over ten years ago.
We offer a range of services across West Surrey primarily, for those people with a diagnosed mental health problem in an in-patient (hospital) or community setting. It is the expectation that most people will be registered with a GP, and be known to specialist mental health services (e.g. CMHT), although we do accept direct referrals from other voluntary groups within our catchment area.
For those people subject to the powers of the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended) they have a legal right to access the Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) Service. Although all of our mental health advocates can usually assist with most issues, this service deals exclusively with issues arising directly from being subject to the powers of the Act. View the IMHA section for more details.
All of our advocates deal with a large variety of issues, helping clients identify what the outcome they desire is, looking at the options, choosing a path, then supporting the client to achieve this.
Some examples of what are advocates can help with:
• Legal rights (not just Mental health Act)
• Help with benefits, including preparation and attending Tribunals
• Preparation/Attending meetings
• Support with Child and Adult Protection
• Employment disputes
• Helping make complaints
• Accessing Specialist Services e.g. CAB, solicitors, etc
