Older Persons Advocacy - Spenser Ward

Spenser Ward is situated within the Abraham Cowley Unit on the ground floor. The ward is an acute admission/assessment ward for people with either a functional or organic mental health problem.  Care is provided for people with a known or suspected mental health problems that need intensive care and cannot be provided in the community.  Admissions may last for a few days, weeks or months depending on many factors, including the severity of illness and response to medication.

Spenser has 22 beds.  There are some single rooms and two dormitories each housing 6 beds, one for male and one for female clients. There is a bathroom attached each dorm. There are four other bathrooms on the ward which are shared by all the patients and several lavatories with washbasins.

Telephone: You can contact the ward on 01932 722468

Visiting times             Monday- Friday 3pm – 8pm. Saturday and Sunday 10 – 8pm.

Medication is usually given at 8am, 12pm, 5pm and between 9-10pm

Activities

There is an Occupational Therapist dedicated to the ward and a range of activities take place from Monday to Friday.  Included in the range of activities are Current Affairs, Healthy Living, Relaxation and Therapy Groups.

Nursing care is provided 24 hours a day with the addition of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and psychiatrists.

Ward rounds take place on a weekly basis with the staff involved in your care.  You will be asked to attend and discuss plans for your treatment.  The nurses on the ward should advise you of the day and time of you ward round.

Food

Breakfast           from  8am

Lunch                from 12pm

Supper              from 5pm

Patients are encouraged to have their food in the dining room on the ward. Hot and cold drinks are available from the ward kitchen throughout the day.

If patients are able to leave the ward unassisted, there is a restaurant adjoining the day hospital, which is also on the ground floor.  This is not an extension of the food the NHS provides, but an outside caterer providing the service.

Community meetings on the ward are held sporadically with Partners for Positive Change, the most recent one being in February of this year.  There are plans to make this a more regular occurrence. The patients on the ward can get together with an independent chairperson and discuss any issues on the ward i.e. services, food, environment or any other issues that may arise pertaining to the ward.  PPC are currently working on an information booklet for Spenser Ward to provide as much info as possible for patients and their carers, after admission to the ward.  You can contact the Partners’ Organisation on: 01932 875103.

Special Needs

If you have any special needs such as diet, hearing, visual, physical or other, speak to the nursing staff.

Religious & Spiritual Needs

There is a chaplaincy team at the hospital.  This is available for people of any Faith or none at all.  The chapel is located  in the A&E wing.  The chapel garden provides a quiet place for reflection.

The Chaplain is on 01932 884488 or call 872000 and ask for the ‘on call’ chaplain.

Shop

There is a small shop on the ACU site, selling newspapers, confectionary, sandwiches, hot and cold drinks, basic toiletries and cigarettes. This is open from approx 10 –4 pm daily.

Smoking is permitted in the smoking lounge and the courtyard garden only.

There is a day hospital to the left of the main entrance of the ACU Unit.  After discharge from the ward, patients may attend the Day Hospital as part of their Care Plan Agreement to aid in their recovery.
