USEFUL TIPS FOR:
Ward Round, CPA's, Reviews, s117 Meetings & other meetings
These meetings give you the
opportunity to express your views. If there is something you want to
raise with your doctor, these meetings serve as a good opportunity to do
so.
You can always ask for an advocate to
represent you at one of these meetings. The advocate would usually have
a discussion with you either the day before or, where this is not
possible or preferable, directly before the meeting, to discuss the
points you want to get across. The advocate can make a note of your
points and will offer you various options:
With the Advocate you can:
Tell your doctor your
points of view yourself and simply want the advocate to be there for
moral support.
Tell your doctor your
points yourself- but, want to be either guided through each one by the
advocate or, only reminded of them if you forget one.
Or, want the advocate to
represent you fully by making all your points on your behalf.
If you decide on the
last option- you can always change your mind and the advocate can let
you continue, or if you suddenly change your mind when you have said you
will speak, the advocate will happily continue on your behalf.
Tips for attending these meetings
without an advocate:
If you have trouble remembering what
to say, make a note of the point you want to get across in the meeting,
before hand, that you can refer to.
You can keep an
ongoing list during the week for you to add things to as and when you
think of them
If there has been
something you have been working towards, for, example, overnight leave-
then think of examples to support your argument- ie. Your conduct on
previous leave- punctual return, taking medication as required etc.
To structure your day, and feel more
settled, ask (or ask an advocate
to act on your behalf) to try to arrange or
confirm an appointment time for your meeting.
Try not to worry about your meeting,
but think of it as an opportunity to be heard- and if you feel you were
not heard- ask an advocate to attend where possible with you, next time.
